Chapter 20

She sucked in a breath, heart pounding.
“How do you feel?”

“Like I’d kill for you.”

Bonus Scene:

On the morning of Lucy’s abduction by Dahrio Salonga—

“Okay, so I’m just gonna say it. I’m scared shitless.” Nolan turned to Jackson after roll call, idling a bit when they should have been setting up shop.

“Right? What if Lucy really is in danger?” whispered Jackson, checking the hallway for Harper and her devil’s hearing.

Nolan stuttered and flapped a hand in the air. “Of course, yes, worried about that too. But at the moment, I’m scared shitless of that guy.”

Jackson turned to look where Nolan was pointing. “Ah. He is the more pressing threat. Locally speaking.”

Bradford was pacing through the bullpen, actually looking like a bull, his arms crossed and head down as he stomped at the ground. Everyone was keeping their distance, especially Harper, who had pushed back at him hardest during roll call when Bradford basically tried to declare a state of emergency for his boot.

Grey had just sent cops on a welfare check to her place, but having heard what Harper did to Chen overnight, it seemed people were siding with her version of events. Lucy was probably mad and triggered, thus leaving policing for good.

“Just doesn’t sound like Chen though,” muttered Nolan, his mind whirring. “She doesn’t give in to triggers. She pushes back. Remember when you undressed her in front of everyone?”

“I didn’t!”

“Right. No. You know what I mean—”

“Yeah.” Jackson glanced at the floor. “I know what you mean.”

“It’s okay, man, that’s behind you both.”

Jackson looked up. “Maybe we should do a welfare check ourselves.”

“Nolan! West! What the hell are you two still doing in the hallway?” Bradford was heading their way, his crazed eyes trained on them.

“Cower or run?” whispered Nolan.

“I vote run. Not my T.O.” West made a beeline for Harper as Bradford grew redder in the face.

“Boots!”

West turned back around because that was really all you could do when that hellfire tone of voice rained down upon your rookie soul.

“Sir, how can we help?” Nolan said quickly, and if he dared say so to himself, quite brilliantly.

Bradford paused, surprised. “With?”

“Lucy. How can we help find her when everyone else is being so dismissive?”

The raging training officer uncrossed his arms. “So you agree something’s happened to her.”

“Duh,” said both rookies.

Bradford nodded. “Good. Good. Too bad you’re both useless, untrained fools, and one of you has been trained by Harper.” He spat the name.

But before he could say anything else, Metro waddled into the station together like ducklings behind their sergeant. Bradford got a strange new glint in his eye and just wandered off without another word.

Nolan and Jackson looked at each other in deep relief.

“We’re alive!” said Jackson, fist in the air.

“You haven’t set up shop?!” Harper’s voice rang out.

Nolan sighed. “And now I’m dead.”
